1st Annual Canines for the Cure Texas Agility Shoot-Out a huge success!

The 1st Annual Canines for the Cure Texas Agility Shoot-Out took place June 19-20 at the Watt Arena of the Will Rogers Memorial Complex in Fort Worth, TX. It was the first event ever where multiple agility clubs came together to host one agility trial for the purpose of raising money to help in the fight against canine cancer.

Many thanks to Patty Drom of Dallas Dog Sports, Linda Knowles of Gold Medal Agility, and Pamela Meeks of Fort Worth Agility Sports Team who embraced the vision of a fundraiser trial and joined Christi Farley, trial chair, and Nikki Heep, trial secretary, to create this exciting event.

The hope was to have at least 85 dogs entered in the event and raise $10,000 for the National Canine Cancer Foundation. Whoever said “everything’s bigger in Texas” wasn’t kiddin’. This first Texas Agility Shoot-Out had 308 dogs entered with over 1200 runs for the weekend, and the participants raised $28,000 towards cancer research.

Because of the generosity of everyone involved in this event, a hemangiosarcoma research grant for Dr. Jaime Modiano was able to be fully funded.

This event would have never occurred had it not been for the incredible bond between Christi Farley and her own dog, Ranger, who passed away on July 20, 2009, to mast cell cancer. Christi promised Ranger that something good would come of losing him. Through the passion to fulfill that promise, the 1st Annual Canines for the Cure Texas Agility Shoot-Out came to be a reality.

Ranger was the Texas Agility Shoot-Out logo dog this first year and was featured on all correspondence as well as the commemorative t-shirt.

Christi realizes she is not the only one to ever lose a heart dog. You see, cancer is the number one cause of death in dogs.  One in three dogs will be diagnosed with cancer, and fifty-percent of the dogs diagnosed with cancer will die as a result.  Many have been touched by this terrible disease, but it is our hope that as a direct result of the Canines for the Cure Texas Agility Shoot-Out many more will be saved.
