The
National Canine Cancer Foundation, a nationwide,
contribution funded, not-for-profit corporation,
has committed to its contributors, that funds
will go directly to the scientist studying cancer.
To achieve this the Foundation focuses it's funding
on investigator-initiated, peer-reviewed proposals.
This process ensures that scientists propose projects
that they believe are ready to be tackled with
the available knowledge and techniques, rather
than working on projects designed by administrators
who are far removed from the front lines of research.
This intellectual freedom encourages discovery
in areas that scientists believe are most likely
to solve the problems of cancer.
The purpose of the Foundation’s Research
Grant Program is to encourage and provide grant
support for basic, pre-clinical and clinical research
in high impact and innovative cancer research,
which is intended to develop innovative approaches
to a cure, treatment, diagnosis or prevention
of cancers in dogs. The program fosters collaboration
between basic and clinical scientists with the
intent of enhancing the transfer of basic research
findings to clinical usefulness and eventually
new treatments and ultimately cures for cancer
in dogs.

Review Procedures cont'd
The Foundation’s review process begins with the Scientific
Advisory Board reviewing all grant proposal, grading them and making
their recommendation. If a proposal for a grant has been submitted
by one our Scientific Advisory Board of Directors, that Board member
cannot review their own proposal nor can they attempt to influence
the other Board members.
Once the Scientific Advisory Board has made their recommendations,
the General Advisory Board and the Board of Directors of the Foundation
shall review the recommended proposals and make the final decision
on what research grants will be funded.
REVIEW CRITERIA
· The probability of an advance in prevention, diagnosis
or treatment in the near-term.
· The conceptual basis upon which the proposal rests.
· The novelty of the concept and strategy.
· The clarity of presentation.
· The overall plan for bringing the research findings to
clinical application.
· Experience, background, and qualifications of investigators.
· Adequacy of resources and environment (facilities, patient
population, data management, and data analysis).
· Adequacy of provisions for protection of animal subjects.
The Foundation's research grants do not provide funds or will not
allow in their research for such items as:
· The purchase of dogs
· Dog research colonies
· Projects involving disease induction or injury models in
dogs
· Euthanasia of healthy dogs
· Transportation of live or dead dogs
ANIMAL USE AND CARE
Investigations involving research animals must comply with The Animal
Welfare Act, US Public Health Service Policy on the Humane Care
and Use of Laboratory Animals, or the NIH Guide for the Care and
Use of Laboratory Animals (http://grants.nih.gov/grants/olaw/references/phspol.htm).
Any Foundation funded projects must be performed in a manner that
protects the animals in the project from unnecessary pain and suffering.
Funding will not be provided for procedures or experiments involving
disease induction and/or euthanasia of healthy dogs. The Foundation
will not support the establishment or maintenance of a colony. A
copy of the Foundation’s animal care policy will accompany
the application request.
